The Plastic Problem in Indian Cleaning Products — and How Asepsis Is Solving It
Share
I want to talk about plastic — specifically the plastic that Indian households generate through their cleaning routines, and why most of it is completely avoidable.
My name is Hardik Dabra. I founded Asepsis Products in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab, with the tagline "Reduce Plastic, Not Hygiene." That tagline came directly from my frustration with what I saw in the cleaning products market — an industry that had structured itself to generate maximum packaging waste for no reason other than that pre-diluted, heavily packaged products looked like better value to consumers who had not thought carefully about what they were actually buying.
The Scale of the Problem
India generates approximately 3.4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. Household cleaning products contribute significantly to this total. Consider the cleaning routine of a typical Indian family of four:
- Floor cleaner: 1 litre bottle every 2 weeks = 26 bottles per year
- Bathroom cleaner: 1 bottle per month = 12 bottles per year
- Glass cleaner: 1 spray bottle every 6 weeks = 9 bottles per year
That is approximately 47 plastic bottles per year for cleaning products alone — per household. At 85–100g of plastic per bottle, one household generates 4–4.7 kg of cleaning plastic waste per year. Across India's 250+ million households, cleaning product plastic waste is a genuinely massive problem.
Why Is Almost All of It Avoidable?
Because 80–95% of a pre-diluted cleaning product is water. The active cleaning ingredients — disinfectants, surfactants, fragrance — make up the remaining 5–20%. The water is in every Indian home already. It does not need to be transported from a factory in a plastic bottle.
The concentrate format eliminates this. A 250ml Asepsis Advance Phenyl pouch contains the active ingredients for 5 litres of floor cleaning solution. The consumer adds water at home. The packaging is a lightweight 250ml pouch generating 70g of plastic — vs 5 litres of pre-diluted product in rigid bottles generating 425–450g of plastic. Plastic saving per purchase: 355–380g. Per year per household switching from pre-diluted to Asepsis: approximately 840g–1.2kg on floor cleaner alone.
The 700+ kg Milestone
When Asepsis crossed 10,000 customers and 15,000+ parcels delivered, the collective plastic saving across our customer base exceeded 700 kg. I want to put that in context:
- 700 kg of plastic = approximately 8,200 standard 1-litre cleaning product bottles eliminated
- If those bottles were laid end to end, they would stretch approximately 2.5 km
- Each kilogram of plastic that does not get produced avoids not just the disposal problem but the manufacturing energy, the transportation weight, and the raw material extraction
700 kg sounds large. In the context of India's cleaning plastic waste problem, it is a beginning. The mission scales with every household that makes the switch. 10,000 customers saving 700 kg. 100,000 customers would save 7,000 kg. 1 million customers — a realistic long-term number for a pan-India D2C brand — would eliminate over 70,000 kg of cleaning plastic per year.
Why "Reduce Plastic, Not Hygiene" Is the Exact Right Frame
The most common objection I hear to eco-format cleaning products is that they compromise on performance. Natural cleaners, DIY solutions, "gentle" formulations — the perception is that eco-friendly means less effective. Asepsis was specifically built to disprove this framing.
Asepsis Advance Phenyl (250ml makes 5L, ₹36/litre) delivers 99.9% germ elimination on floor surfaces. Super Strong Phenyl (250ml makes 2L, ₹60/litre) delivers 3× stronger disinfection for bathrooms and drains. These are not compromised products. They outperform most pre-diluted market alternatives on germ kill, fragrance duration, and cost per litre — while generating 85% less packaging waste.
Effective and eco-responsible are not opposites. The concentrate format proves it.
What Comes Next
The concentrate format needs to become the default expectation for Indian consumers — not the exception that requires explanation. When someone searches for "floor cleaner" in Bhubaneswar or Patna or Guwahati, their first instinct should be to look for a concentrate format and ask how much it makes. That shift in consumer expectation is what drives lasting, structural reduction in cleaning plastic waste.
Asepsis is building toward that shift — one customer at a time, one parcel at a time, one kilogram of plastic saved at a time. If you are reading this and you currently buy pre-diluted floor cleaner, bathroom cleaner, or glass cleaner in rigid plastic bottles: the alternative exists, it is cheaper, and it works better. The only thing stopping you from making the switch is familiarity with the old format.
