How to Remove Paan (Betel Leaf) Stains from Floor — Complete Indian Guide
Share
Paan stains are one of the most uniquely Indian cleaning challenges — and one of the most dreaded. The red colour comes from a combination of betel nut (supari) tannins and slaked lime (chuna), which together create a stain that bonds aggressively to porous surfaces. The longer it sits, the harder it becomes to remove completely.
Why Paan Stains Are So Difficult
- Dual staining agent: Tannins from betel nut + alkaline lime create a two-part chemical bond with the tile surface
- Sets fast: Within 30 minutes on tiles, the stain begins bonding to the glaze
- Penetrates porous surfaces: Cement floors, unglazed tiles and natural stone absorb paan stain quickly and deeply
- Resistant to plain water: Water alone spreads the stain further — never mop fresh paan with water first
Fresh Paan Stain — Act Within 15 Minutes
- Blot, never rub. Use dry cloth or tissue to absorb as much liquid as possible
- Cold water only — hot water sets the stain permanently. Dab with cold wet cloth
- Apply Super Strong Phenyl directly on the stain — undiluted or minimally diluted
- Leave 15 minutes — do not disturb during dwell time
- Scrub firmly with a soft nylon brush — not steel wool
- Rinse and check. Repeat if colour remains
Old / Set Paan Stains
For stains that have been sitting for hours or days:
- Apply Super Strong Phenyl directly, leave 20–30 minutes
- Firm scrub, rinse
- Repeat the following day
- Repeat a third time if needed — most old paan stains respond by the third treatment
- If a faint pink remains after 3 treatments, it is likely permanently bonded to the glaze — this is common on unglazed or matte finish tiles
By Floor Surface Type
| Floor Type | Method | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Glazed ceramic tiles | Super Strong Phenyl direct + 15 min dwell | No metal scrubbers |
| Marble | Super Strong Phenyl diluted (1:2 with water) + soft cloth only | Never use acid on marble |
| Cement floor | Super Strong Phenyl direct + 20 min + stiff brush | May leave permanent shadow on cement |
| Vitrified tiles | Super Strong Phenyl direct + 15 min | Easiest to clean — vitrified is non-porous |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will bleach remove paan stains from floor?
Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) can lighten paan stains on white tiles, but it also bleaches coloured tiles and damages grout over time. Super Strong Phenyl is safer for repeated use and equally effective on fresh stains.
My marble floor has paan stains from years ago — can they be removed?
Very old paan stains on marble may be permanently absorbed into the stone. A marble polishing service can sometimes grind away the stained surface layer — cleaning products cannot reverse deeply absorbed staining. See our marble floor guide.
